NANOEMULSIONS 10-100 nM
Nanoemulsions are important formulations in various areas, in particular, in cosmetics.
Nanoemulsions with biologically active components seem to be very promising as
they facilitate transfer of such components in solution.
Nanoemulsions are disperse systems in which both phases (disperse phase and dispersion
media) are immiscible or very slightly miscible liquids. Disperse phase consists
of drops which are about 10 to 100 nm in size. In this range nanoemulsion does
not scatter visible light (they are transparent), and possess liposomal effect,
that is, they promote penetration of biologically active substances from disperse
phase to deeper skin layers. Liposomal effect distinguishes nanoemulsions containing
biologically active substances from various extracts and tinctures (propylene
glycol, water-propylene glycol, butylene glycol, alcohol).
A very promising application of nanoemulsions in cosmetics is their use as a disperse
phase for the production of plant CO2-extracts.
It is known that plant CO2-extracts contain up to 600 components, which can not
be extracted from plants by traditional solvent extraction techniques.
Combination of properties of nanoemulsions and plant CO2-extracts allows designing
new cosmetics.
