Anise bears a strong family resemblance to the members of the Apiaceae family that includes dill, fennel, coriander, cumin and caraway; and is native to the eastern Mediterranean region, the Levant and Egypt.
Ingredients: Anise contains volatile oil (1-4%) of which 72-90% is trans-anethole that is known as a phytoestrogen; anisic aldehyde, anisic ketone, anisic acid; coumarins (bergapten, scopoletin, umbelliferone), flavonoid glycosides (apigenin glycosides, isovitexin, luteolin, quercetin, rutin), phenylpropanoids (l-propenyl-2-hydroxy-5-methoxy-benzene-2), lipids, fatty acids, sterols.
Properties: Containing liquorice-like components anise is sweet and very aromatic and is the true taste of licorice;
a mild antiparasitic, antimicrobial (such as for bacteria, fungi, or viruses), antispasmodic, aromatic, carminative (gas pain reliever), helps with digestion and freshen the breath, expectorant, cough relief, memory improvement, antiseptic and soporific; moistens, calms and clears the skin.

Aniseed is used in producing alcoholic beverages, confectionary and cookies, to flavor tea. Dogs are also attracted by anise — it is often an ingredient in dog food. Helpful in hunting and fishing.
It is also used in the manufacture of many commercial cough syrups and sore throat medications, to flavour other medicines and to scent soaps and perfumes. It is also claimed that anise is effective bait for rats and mice.
Relieves menstrual cramps, useful in treating colds and flu, lice and scabies, hiccup, sleeplessness, skin itch, baby rash and intertrigo; asthma, bronchitis, flatulence, intestinal colic; oily skin, pertussis (whooping cough), scabies.
Anise CO2-extract recommended concentration in food, beverages, food supplements and natural remedies is 0.01 – 1%. Replacement rate of dry Aniseed with Aniseed CO2-extract is 1 kg with 25 g correspondingly. For convenient use, it is recommended to dilute the extract in any vegetable oil (sunflower, olive, grape seed, etc.) in ratio of 1:20 before use as a food additive.
Percent ratio to the total mass in skin care products is 0.001 – 0.5%. The use of Anise CO2-extract improves metabolic processes of skin, has calming, antiseptic, and moisturizing effect, improves skin elasticity, and helps retain skin softness and resilience.
Caution: Non-toxic in recommended dosage, not commonly allergenic.
Use of anise is not recommended during pregnancy or nursing. Estrogen activity promoted by anise may negatively contribute in cases of migraine headaches, abnormal blood clotting, and some brain tumors.
Can be taken internally.
