Botanical Source: Pimenta officinalis (dioica) fruits

 

Common names: Pimento, Allspice, Kurundu, Newspice, English Spice, Jamaica Pepper, Clove Pepper, Myrtle Pepper, Pimenta.

 

Latin Name: Pimenta officinalis (dioica), in the Myrtaceae family, native to the West Indies, southern Mexico and Central America.

 

Ingredients: volatile oil, tannins, eugenol, eugenol methyl ether, terpenes (myrcene, 1.8-cineol and α-phellandrene), fatty acids, etc.

 

Properties: Pimento extract has pungent and aromatic bouquet, like a combination of nutmeg, clove, ginger and cinnamon with some of the heat of black pepper. The flavour is warm and sweetly pungent like the combination described above with peppery overtones.

Flavoring, deodorant, digestive, carminative, rubefacient (makes the skin feel warmer), mild anesthetic, warming, antimicrobial, antifungal, insect-repellent, stimulant, tonic, anodyne (a pain-relieving medicine milder than an analgesic), antioxidant, bactericidal, stomachic, anthelmintic, antiperiodic, hypotensive, central nervous system (CNS) depressant, hypothermic, reduces the growth of human prostate cancer cells.
